How to sell Pokémon cards online without leaving money on the table
What your cards are worth, where to sell them and what actually reaches your account, with real numbers instead of rules of thumb.

To sell Pokémon cards online you need three things: the real market price of the card, an honest condition grade, and a marketplace where buyers are actually looking. On Trademeup you pay a 3 % selling commission and the buyer pays for buyer protection. On a 100 € card you keep 97 €.

First: what is the card actually worth?
The most common reason for a bad sale is a price that was guessed. Three numbers get mixed up:
- The asking price. What other people want. It says nothing about what anyone pays.
- The market price. What is actually paid, averaged across several marketplaces.
- The price of your copy. The market price describes an unplayed card. A played card is worth considerably less, a graded one considerably more.
Every card page separates all three: the weighted market price, the marketplaces it comes from, and a price ladder that prices the same card in every condition and every grade. Numbers that are only estimated carry a ≈, so nobody mistakes an estimate for a price.
Condition decides the price, not the description
The scale is short and international:

Two rules from practice: look at the card in raking light, not straight on: edge wear and scratches only show that way. And when in doubt, grade one step lower. An EX card sold as NM costs you a return and a review; an NM card sold as EX costs you a few percent.

Honestly: Cardmarket has more buyers than we do. What you get here is a lower fee, a price whose origin is on the table, and buyer protection that costs you nothing. On expensive cards the fee difference runs into three figures quickly.
Listed in five steps
- Find the card. Name, set code or number. If the search lands on the wrong set, check the number in the bottom left corner of the card.
- State condition and language. Only the languages this card actually exists in are offered. You cannot accidentally list a Portuguese print that was never made.
- Set the price. The field is pre-filled with the price for your condition, not for a flawless copy. If you want a fast sale, go a few percent below it.
- Take photos. In practice mandatory above 20 €: front and back, square on, daylight and no flash. For graded cards include the certificate number.
- Enter the weight. A single card is about 4 g and postage is calculated from it. For sealed products enter the real weight or shipping will cost you money.
What actually reaches you

Buyer protection costs you nothing: the buyer chooses it and the buyer pays for it: 7 % when you sell privately, 5 % for professional sellers. The money is then held in escrow until the buyer confirms receipt, and at the latest 14 days after confirmed delivery.
Shipping: where most sales go wrong
- Card into a penny sleeve, then a toploader or between two pieces of card, then a rigid envelope.
- Above roughly 30 € in value, always use tracking. Without proof of delivery you lose every dispute.
- Never loose in a paper envelope. A card that arrives creased is worthless.
Common questions
Is grading worth it before selling? Only for cards already worth three figures raw. Submission costs around 25 € plus shipping and takes weeks. Every card page shows the arithmetic explicitly: what the best grade would bring, less commission and submission costs. Whether your card reaches that grade, nobody knows in advance.
How fast does a card sell? That depends on the price, not the card. List at the market price and you wait; list 5–10 % below and it usually sells within days. The card page shows how many copies are on offer and how many are wanted right now.
Do I have to pay tax? Occasional sales from your own collection are not a trade in most EU countries. Buying regularly in order to resell is. Above certain thresholds marketplaces report your turnover to the tax authorities automatically (DAC7). When in doubt, ask an accountant.
Can I sell several cards together? Yes. A buyer who puts several of your listings in one basket gets one shipment, so one parcel for you instead of five.
